Another Campus Shooting…

Once again, there has been a shooting at a university campus in the US. On February 14, a gunman killed five students at Northern Illinois University. The killer died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had been a graduate student in sociology at the university but was no longer enrolled. Sadly, the Northern Illinois shooting is part of a long list of random or semi-random shootings on university and college campuses:

USA / 2008 – February 14: Five people are killed when a man opens fire in a classroom at Northern Illinois University near Chicago, including the gunman who killed himself.

USA / 2007 – September 21: eighteen-year old student Loyer D. Braden shot two seventeen year old Delaware State University students from Washington, D.C.

USA / 2007 – April 16: A gunmen kills 32 people and himself and wounds 15 others at Virginia Tech University in the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history.

Canada / 2006 – September 13: Kimveer Gill opens fire on the street and inside the college in Montreal’s Dawson College, killing one student and injuring 19 others. Gill kills himself after a battle with police.

USA / 2002 – October 28: Robert Flores, a forty year old failing student of the University of Arizona Nursing College, walks into an instructor’s office and fatally shoots her. A few minutes later, he enters one of his nursing classrooms and kills two more of his instructors before fatally shooting himself.

Australia / 2002 – October 21: Huan Xiang, 37, an honors student at Monash University in Melbourne, shoots and kills two students and wounds five other people.

USA / 2002 – January 16: A student who had been dismissed from the Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Virginia, kills the dean, a professor and a student, and wounds three others.

Costa Rica / 2000 – May 13:, 2000: A gunman opens fire on a crowd of students celebrating college week at the University of Costa Rica, killing one and injuring five.

USA / 1996 – August 15: Frederick Martin Davidson is defending his thesis before a faculty committee at San Diego State University when he pulls out a handgun and kills three professors.

Denmark / 1994 – April 5: Two female students are killed and two others are wounded by a 35-year-old man who stalked through Aarhus University cafeterias with a sawed-off shotgun. The killer shot himself afterwards.

USA / 1992 – December 14: Wayne Lo carried out a shooting rampage at the Simon’s Rock College of Bard. One professor and one student were wounded. Four students were injured.

Canada / 1992 – August 24: Valery Fabrikant, 52, a professor of mechancial engineering at Concordia University in Montreal, shoots and kills three colleagues. He had been embroiled in a feud with his fellow academicians and the university administration over his tenure and research.

USA / 1991 – November 1: Gang Lu, a graduate student in physics at the University of Iowa, shot and killed five people on the Iowa campus in Iowa City, seriously wounded another, then committed suicide.

Canada / 1989 – December 6: A gunman kills 14 women, most of them female engineering students, with a semiautomatic rifle at the University of Montreal engineering school. Nine women and four men are wounded, in the worst massacre in Canadian history that ends when the gunman kills himself.

USA / 1976 – July 12: The California State University massacre took place when Edward Charles Allaway, a custodian at the Cal State Fullerton library, shot nine people in the basement and first floor of the library. Seven of the nine wounded victims died.

USA / 1966 – August 1: Charles Joseph Whitman, a student at the University of Texas at Austin, killed 14 people and wounded 31 others. He did this shortly after murdering his wife and mother. He was eventually shot and killed by Austin police.
